Fred looks at a PHONE SCAM SPAM!

This SPAM has been flooding out into the net over the past week.
Dial-a-porn SPAMs are nothing new, but these jerks have gone for broke with
this one repeatedly SPAMming the same inboxes. This bunch of crooks have
a good incentive to SPAM like hell, they'll make (shall I say steal) a lot
of money if they can sucker enough people into the calling that number.
The area code "664" is in Montserrat, the small island in the
Caribbean that has in the news in recent months for being largely consumed
by a volcano. Somehow I doubt the telephone vixens, Susan, Sarah, and Sally
are actually there brushing volcanic dust off themselves between rounds of
"hot" phone calls. The island's capitol city, Plymouth, looks more like
ancient Pompeii these days having been buried under volcanic ash. More likely,
calls made to this number are being routed elsewhere, probably an 809 or 900
number. The end result being that whoever is stupid enough to actually call
that number will have one heck of a phone bill. "809" calls have cost as much
as $20 per minute with most of that money going right into the scammers pockets
These days with the phone companies adding new area codes right and left almost
on a daily basis, not very many will stop to think and wonder where the heck
"664" is. So Joe Schmoe who has a 10 cent-a-minute long distance plan thinks,
"heck, for 10 cents a minute, let's have some fun with Susan, Sally, and Sarah."
Well, anyone calling that number probably won't get a "hot babe" on the other
end, but probably a recording after which you'll be placed on hold. Joe Schmoe
thinks well at 10 cents a minute, I can wait. So Joe waits 10 or 15 minutes,
and gives up. Then Joe goes into cardiac arrest when he gets his phone bill.
The scammers get their money, and poor old Joe either has to pay up or go
around in circles with BellSouth over his bill.
So beware of small islands with volcanos on them!
