CAUCE

Organizing against SPAM

Why is this page this awful pink color?

INTI as a small, informal organization has never gone for lengthy AUP's (acceptable use policies) in providing internet connectivity. Our feeling is and remains that most people will use the net in a reasonable and prudent manner. INTI remains steadfast in that thinking, but SPAMming has become a serious problem for INTI as an internet gateway. Recently INTI has become the target of mass email attacks where rogue internet sites have abused INTI facilities in their SPAMing of the net. These SPAMmers are a vicious lot, they'll go to any length to abuse the net by stealing domain names and spoofing legitimate mail servers on net.
INTI has had it share of abuse in recent weeks with SPAMmer's and we have been forced to undertake measures to prevent abuse by SPAMmer's. We are implementing measures to block our servers from forwarding email from known rogue domains and any other domain that appears to be the source of SPAM. We think we can do this without interfering with legitimate email exchanges.
INTI supports CAUCE in the fight against SPAM, but CAUCE is promoting a legislative solution to SPAM which is certainly a worthwhile goal, but it might be a long time in coming and a legislative fiat against SPAM may be difficult to enforce. At the present time, it is up to the net community to "harden" itself against SPAM. If SMTP relay blocking is implemented across the net, SPAMming will be reduced greatly. SPAMmers ply their trade largely by using "open" SMTP servers to forward their SPAM. SPAMming software such as "Extractor" and "Stealth" live off the weakness of SMTP server security. In a landscape of SECURE SMTP servers, SPAMmers would be forced to "circle their wagons" and SPAM through SPAM friendly sites. By forcing SPAMmers to retreat to "SPAM friendly" sites, it will eliminate many of the "high school SPAMmers" who couldn't afford the steep prices charged by SPAM friendly sites for access to their SMTP relays. That in itself would probably eliminate much SPAM that these kids send out for chain letter MMF schemes such as the Karen Liddell or Christopher Erickson "4 reports" schemes. Other SPAMmers such as Mega$Nets, WinCash, MegaResource, or other computerized Ponzis might pay the price, but if they are forced to concentrate to SPAM friendly ISP's, it will be much easier to use domain blacklisting and/or IP filtering to stop them and they'll realize that their MMF SPAM's are getting nowhere and they'll give up their dreams of a black Acura Integra in the driveway and think about getting a real job to pay for that car of their dreams or a vacation in Venice, or in some cases saving their marraige. (some SPAM's like to claim that MMF schemes saved their marraige) It seems to be a new phenom, MMF will save your marraige and let you retire early.
